Rizodal

Composition :

Each tablet RIZODAL® 1 contains Risperidone 1 mg

Each tablet RIZODAL® 2 contains Risperidone 2 mg

Each tablet RIZODAL® 3 contains Risperidone 2 mg

Pharmacology :

Risperidone is a selective monoaminergic antagonist with unique properties. Has a high affinity for serotonin 5-HT2 and dopamine D2 receptors. Risperidone also binds to α-1 adrenergic receptors and low-affinity to histamiminergic H1 and adrenergic α-2. Risperidone does not has affinity to cholinergic receptors. Although Risperidone is a strong D2 antagonist, which improves the positive symptoms of schiziphrenia, it causes depression of motor activity and induces less catalepsy than classical neuroleptics. A serotonin antagonist and balanced central dopamine can reduce extrapyramidal side effects and expand therapeutic activity against the negative and effective symptoms of schizophrenia.

Indication :

Acute and chronic schizophrenia, other psychiatric conditions where positive and negative reactions occur. Also effective to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia.

Dosage :

Schizophrenia

Patients who changee from other antipsychotics: when Risperidone therapy is initiated, patients are recommended to discontinue antipsychotic use in advance, as well as when Risperidone therapy is initiated in patients who previously used antiparkinson’s drugs, patients should be evaluated gradually.

  • Adult: Risperidone can taken once daily or twice daily.

Risperidone should start with a dose of 2 mg per day. Dosage may be increased to 4 mg on the second day. Furthermore, the dosage can be maintained or adjusted to the condition of each patient, if necessary. Most patients experienced marked improvement in dosing of 4 mg and 6 mg per day. Some patients require a slow titration phase, with a lower initial dose and better dosage maintenance. Doses above 10 mg/day are no more effective than lower doses and may increase extrapyramidal symptoms. Safety doses over 16 mg/day have not been evaluated, do not use drugs over this dose, Benzodiazepines may be given on the use of Risperidone when additional sedation is required.

  • Elderly

The recommended initial dose is 0.5 mg twice daily. This dose can be adjusted to the needs of each patient with an additional 0.5 mg twice daily, so as to achieve 1-2 mg twice daily. Risperidone is well tolerated by elderly patients.

  • Children

No experience use in patients <15 years of children with schizophrenia.

  • Kidneys and Liver Disorders

Patients with renal disorder will experience a decreased ability to eliminate antipsychotic active fraction compared with normal patients. Patients with liver function disorder will experience increased plasma concentration of free fraction of Risperidone. Regardless of indication, the initial dose and maintenance dose in the patient should be half the normal dose and the dose titration should be slower in patients with renal and hepatic disorders.
