Genicol
Composition :
Each capsule GENICOL® contains Thiamphenicol 500 mg
Pharmacology :
- Thiamphenicol is a broad-spectrum synthetic antibiotic and has strong bacteriostatic activity, but at high doses it also acts as a bactericide.
- Thiamphenicol acts by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial proteins and in free cell systems by suppressing the activity of peptidyl tranferase enzymes catalyzing the formation of bacterial protein peptide bonds.
- Thiamphenicol can be quickly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and diffuse into the tissues of the body well including gallbladder and cerebrospinal fluid over other antibiotics
- The half-life of Thiamphenicol is approximately 2-3 hours, after 24 hours of oral Thiamphenicol administration, approximately 80% – 90% has been excreted through the kidneys largely in unchanged form
Indication :
- As the first choice for the treatment of typhus or parathypus
- For severe infections caused by:
- Salmonella spp
- influenzae (mainly meningeal meningitis)
- Ricketsia
- Lymphogranuloma-psithacosis
- Gram negative that causes bacteremia meningitis
Dosage :
Adult:
- Respiratory tract infection: 500 mg, 3 times daily for 5 days
- Urinary tract infection: 500 mg, 4 times daily for 5 days
- Gastrointestinal tract infection: 500 mg, 3 times daily minimum for 5 days
Children: 20-40 mg/kg body weight/day or according to the doctor’s instruction
